The Influence of Hypertension and Gender on Cerebrovascular Diseases.
In this retrospective study we analyzed the influence of hypertension and gender on cerebrovascular diseases (CVD). We studied a database of all 490 patients (pts) with CVD hospitalized at the Department of Neurology, General Hospital, Bjelovar, Croatia during 1999. We found significant differences in presence of hypertension in women with ischemic stroke (76.2%) against men (57.8%). The mortality rate was significantly higher in all pts with hypertension and hemorrhagic stroke. Mortality rate of normotensive pts with ischemic stroke was higher than in pts with hypertension, what leads to conclusion that in this pts was a dominant rule of other risk factors. With changing of life style, risk factors and treatment, especially of hypertension, we can reduce incidence and mortality of pts with stroke.
