W Values for Protons and Carbon Ions for use in Hadron Radiotherapy
Hadron radiotherapy, i.e., treatment of cancer by using protons and heavier charged ions, has received a great attention in recent years, due to the unique physical and radiobiological properties of these particles: energy deposition at a certain well-defined depth of tissue (the Bragg peak), higher efficiency in producing biological damage for the same delivered dose (i.e., higher RBE – relative biological effectiveness), higher efficiency in hypoxic conditions, low diffusion of a beam while penetrating the tissue. Therefore, hadron beam can deliver dose to the tumor region in a much pin-point fashion, while not affecting normal (healthy) tissue in front or beyond the tumor. To optimize dose delivery to a tumor in radiotherapy, one must know the energy deposition in a tissue. One of the basic quantities for dosimetry is the W value (mean energy spent by the incident particle for the formation of an electron-ion pair after complete dissipation of its initial energy). W value depends on the type and energy of radiation and on the irradiated material. Accurate knowledge of W is required for conversion of charge to deposited energy. However, available data on W are often fragmented, dispersed, and missing systematic. Recent developments in hadron radiotherapy will be shortly presented in this paper, and a systematic survey of W values for protons and carbon ions will be presented. For high-energy protons, one can find W data in N2, methane, TE gas mixtures, and air. Most of W values for carbon ions are measured for energies below 1 MeV/amu, where major variations in energy dependence are observed. Here, special attention will be paid to carbon ions of high energies (200 – 400 MeV/amu), that are used in carbon-ion therapy facilities.
