Electrical Drives for Explosive Atmospheres : Motor Selection and Risk Assesment
This paper focuses on the specific selection of electrical motors for electrical drives (ED) in areas endangered by explosive atmospheres (hazardous areas), from the aspect of mandatory application of ATEX Directives, and the risk assessment associated with this. The paper primarily analyzes the selection of an electrical motor depending on the required explosion protection type of the motor (EEx d, EEx n or motor for general purposes), in combination with the associated safety equipment installed. In a particular example of motor selection for oil pumping, the results of analyses from two different approaches are shown, the traditional (old approach) and the new approach. One of the numerous concepts of applying systems that combine a motor with an associated safety device or system is illustrated. The results of the selection of an electrical motor and associated safety systems, from the aspect of safety and economy, have been provided.
