Structural analysis of asphalt carriers
The aim of the paper is to describe extensive finiteelement analysis carried out in the design phase of asphalt carriers that are presently under construction in Croatia. The structural analysis of these ships is more demanding than that of ordinary oil tankers since heated cargo is carried in non-structural tanks, connected with ship hull by a large number of supports and keys. The 3-hold methodology is used for finite element structural analysis with an iterative procedure to properly account for non-linear stiffness of vertical supports at high temperatures. Based on the experience gained during the analysis, some general conclusions are drawn that may be useful in the future design of this type of ship.
