Evaluation of Welded TMCP Steel for Resistance to HIC and SSC
Recent development in technology of steels produced by thermomechanical controled processing (TMCP) allowed the appropriate combination of chemical composition, deformation level, rolling temperature and cooling rate to result in easily weldable steel grades characterized with high strength as well as high ductility and toghness at the same time. The possibility of their application in different service circumstances isn't still yet fully recognized, particularly the behaviour of the welded joints in aggressive environments which contain dissolved H2S-gas, a promoter of hydrogen entry into steel. Hence, in this study considerable effort has been directed to the evaluation of welded TMCP plates for resistance to hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) and sulphide stress corrosion cracking (SSC). Tests were performed in acidified NaCl solution (pH 3) with H2S saturated according to NACE TM0284-2003. Welded TMCP steel under the study satisfied all the requirements for the application in the wet H2S environment according to NACE TM 0284-2003 and NACE TM 0177-96.
