Resistance to HIC and SSC of TM-Rolled Fine Grain Structural Steel
Modern metallurgical technology resulted in the combination of thermal and mechanical treatment (TM) in steel production. Very fine grain structure with high toughness and strength were achieved, which cannot be obtained by thermal treatment alone. Since no structural alloy is totally immune to hydrogen embrittlement, in this paper resistance to hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) and sulfide stress cracking (SSC) of TM-rolled fine grain structural steel was examined and compared to the conventional normalized steel. Metallographic analyses of HIC and SSC coupons revealed that TM-rolled steel can be considered as candidate material for ASTM A516 - 70 plate steel.
