The importance of 5S and 7S immunoglobulins in neurololgy

During the last few decades neurology has gone through the biggest changes since its foundation: from a relatively conservative, mostly epistemologically oriented clinical discipline, with limited diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities it has changed to a very active medical specialty with high possibilities of early diagnostics, rational, sometimes radical and often cause-oriented therapies, as well as with new possibilities of primary or secondary prevention of some neurological diseases. Many important advances in basic neurosciences combined with meticulous neuroepidemiologic investigations and sophisticated technological diagnostics enabled the growing insight into the basic pathophysiological mechanisms responsible far the origins and course of neurological diseases, improving constantly our competence towards their rational management and introducing new ways of their treatment. The specially important advances have been reached in the field of neurologic immune diseases, reflecting the body's natural biologic defenses against microbial, viral, neoplastic ar other aggression and the complex mechanisms regulating these immune responses, sometimes accompanied or followed by signs of neurological dysfunctions in the central or peripheral nervous system. Three basic principles have been introduced which were more or less successful. 1 ) Unspecific hormonal medication with carticosteroids in order to diminish the inflammatory elements in the body's immune response, 2) Immunosupopressants with the complex antimetabolic effects and 3) Immunoglobulin therapies, probably most physiologic and most promising approach in the management of this group of neurologic diseases, having properties of various forms of immunomodulation: immunostimulation, immunosuppression or immunosubstitution.
