Decastronema barattoloi (De Castro), index fossil of the Paleocene and the Eocene peritidal sediments from the Adriatic Carbonate Platform

Some of the questions regarding the development of the Adriatic carbonate platform (AdCP) are the age and the conditions of the re-establishment of marine regime after the Senonian emersion. The renewed depositions in the Paleogene are characterized by sediments with presence of Decastronema barattoloi (De CASTRO), originally described in Apennines (De Castro, 1989). The first findings of D. barattoloi (former Aeolisaccus barattoloi (De CASTRO) is confined to the NW part of the AdCP, in Kras region, in Colle di Medea area, where these microbial fossils occur in the Maastrichtian and Danian (Paleocene) sediments (Barattolo, 1998). The following studies in the region (Dolenja vas, Sopada, Čebulovica ; Drobne et al., 1988 ; Drobne et al., 1995 ; Ogorelec et al., 2001) confirmed the presence of the microfossil in sediments ranging in age from the Maastrichtian to the Danian. The Danian sediments are interpreted as of peritidal origin and are included in the Liburnian Fm. The Cuisian (early Eocene) sediments, from the eastern Istria (Labin environ), Cres and Olib (Koromačno Cove and Fučinska bay sections, Ćosović et al., 1994) islands to Ravni kotari (Benkovac section where for the first time these microfossils where found in the Eocene limestones by K. Drobne, see Drobne et al., 1991) contain, in the great number, this species. The cyanobacteria fossils occur in the laminated, fine grained mudstones and wackestones, immediately above the Cretaceous sediments (occasionally above bauxites or breccias). The Decastronema-bearing sediments upward pass into the Foraminifera limestones of known age (based on conical agglutinated foraminifera and alveolinids) allowing the age attribution of cyanobacteria. The abundance of D. barattoloi specimens within laminated sediments redefined its stratigraphic range from the Cretaceous to the Early Eocene and confirmed Golubić et al. (2006) observation of geographic distribution of the species within the Perimediterranean region, within the platformal, peritidal settings.
