Candidate genes in the genesis of stroke
Numerous studies investigating different candidate genes in relation to strokehave revealed conflicting results. The reasons for sucha discrepancy might be explained by the complex etiology of stroke, genetic factors underlying different stroke subtypes, and population-specific genetic inheritance that may lead to divergent results among patients from different countries, thus potemtially producing significant positive associations in some but not in other populations and studies. A large metaanalysis of stroke genetics revealed that 4 of 32 genes studied in 18, 000 stroke subjects and 58, 000 controls were significantly associated with stroke, showing the odds ratios for Factor V Leiden of 1.33 (94 % Cl, 1.12-1.58), MTHFR 1.2 (95% Cl 1.08-1.42) ; prothrombin 1.44 (95% Cl, 1.11-1.86) ; and ACE 1.21 (95% Cl 1.08-1.35).
