Blue Superbright LED's as an Alternative to Soft-start Halogen Curing Unit
The compensation of polymerization shrinkage become the most important problem in direct adhesive fillings, because of the stress on the composite cavity interface and subsequent hypersensitivity of the restored tooth. Pulsed blue laser light is already reported to increase the degree of monomer conversion and decrease the shrinkage in the composite sample, but it is not yet clinically applicable. In this experiment, the curing abilities of blue superbright light emitting diodes (LED) at 470 nm are compared to the conventional powerful Heliolux GTE lamp and the new Elipar Highlight unit with so-called soft-start regime. The results showed no statistical difference between the two commercial units and about 10% lower values for the experimental curing light with only 1/50-th of the usual light intensity. After testing the polymerization shrinkage and increasing the power, blue superbright light emitting diodes could become the wise alternative to standard composite curing. This study was supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Republic of Croatia.
