The efficiency of different light sources for composite curing

Optimal halogen light intensity is necessary for adequate composite polymerization and composite-tooth interface. The conventional curing units have some unavoidable drawbacks influencing the light intensity output including heat generation, wide range of wavelengths, detorioration of bulb and filter, contamination of light tip end and breakage fo photoconductive fibers. 83 lamps were tested by Curing Radiometer Model 100. The initial intensity and the light output after 40 seconds were measured. 35 lamps showed insufficient light intensity output after 40 seconds. The results are represesnted using histograms and Box & Whisker Plot. Very short lifetime of halogen lamp, extreme heat generation of high intensity lamps and inadequate polymerization of low intensity lamps were the reason for introducing the new light sources. However, there is no clinically avilable optimal light source which enable high conversion, low temperature rise and minimal polymerization stress.
