Therapy associated variation in the concentrations of trace elements in schizophrenics
Background: Variation in the homeostasis of trace elements is known to occur in psychiatric patients. Aim. To assess changes in serum concentrations of trace elements (Zn, Cu, Mg and Fe) in control subjects (n=20) and schizophrenic patients (n=35) in the acute stage of disease on admission and at discharge from the hospital. Methods. The concentrations of Cu and Zn were detrermined by the method of atomic absorption on a PerkinElmer Zeeman 3030 atomic absorption spectrofotometer, and those of Fe and Mg by the spectrofotometric method on an Olympus 2700 analiyzer. Results. Results showed the treatment and disease remission to cause only a moderate increase in the concentration of Cu and Cu/Zn ratio as a apotential consequence of antipsychotic therapy.
