Protecting traffic from extreme wind
Croatia is a small European country which greatly varies in its relief forms – in the north we have plains, in the middle part high Velebit Mountain massif and next to them is Adriatic Sea. Complex airflow regime is characterized by a stormy wind called bora which occurs in the southern part of the country on the slopes of Velebit Mountain near the Adriatic coast. Nature of bora is quite unpredictable – it is a north to northeastern gusty wind. The strongest bora occur-rences are from September till March, although it can also reach stormy speeds during the sum-mer months (July and August). This paper treats the influence of the bora wind on traffic safety in this region together with wind protection structures and evaluation of their efficiency.
