Treatment of Reactive Dye Wastewaters Using Advanced Oxidation Processes

Wastestreams originated from dye manufacturing wastewaters and dyehouses presents serious hazard to the environment due to the high content of organic matter and colour visible even in small concentrations of dyes. Therefore this type of wastestreams cannot be discharged into the effluents without prior treatment. Great efforts have been made to investigate new and efficient methods for dye decomposition and decolourization of coloured wastestreams as well. Ideal score would be total mineralization of organic content to CO2 and H2O, which is impossible to achieve with conventional coloured wastewater treatment methods [1-6]. In this work application of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) such as Fenton (Fe(II)/H2O2), ozonation (O3) and peroxone (O3/H2O2) processes for coloured wastestreams treatment have been studied. Water solutions of reactive dyes C.I. Reactive Red 45 (RR45), C.I. Reactive Red 120 (RR120), C.I. Reactive Blue 49 (RB49) and C.I. Reactive Blue 137 (RB137) have been used as model wastewaters. The efficiency of applied AOP has been estimated on the basis of the UV/VIS spectrophotometric measurements and ecological parameters (TOC and AOX). It was observed that the decomposition of all studied dyes follow the pseudo-first order reaction kinetic with the respect to the dye concentration. On the basis of ecological parameters it can be seen that reactive dye wastewaters after AOPs treatment can be discharged to the effluents or reused as process water.
