Genetic diversity of Istrian Malvasia clones in Croatia, Slovenia and Italy
Autochthonous grapevine cultivar Istrian Malvasia, is nowadays the most commercially important and widely cultivated grapevine variety in Istria (Croatia). In the framework of grapevine genetic resources conserving program, old biotypes were chosen in vineyards throughout the Istrian Peninsula (Croatia) and their sanitary state was analyzed. Results revealed that majority of Istrian Malvasia vines are infected with viruses and pointed out the importance and necessity of efficient clonal and sanitary selection programs in the region. The aim of this work was a preliminary molecular characterization (SSR, AFLP) of Italian and Slovenian Istrian Malvasia clones officially listed in the National Grapevine Registries and of old biotypes collected in Croatian vineyards as well as a preliminary evaluation of genetic variability within and between analyzed groups. Observed data will contribute and improve conserving and selection of Istrian Malvasia in Croatia.
