Importance of synonym recognition in aphasic patients

For every word in a lexicon we can find another one, which is in some semantic relation and that relation can be described. Synonyms present semantic relation of two or more words that belong to the same words' type and have different expression while their contents are partly or completely the same. The aim of this study was to find out difficulties in synonym judgments in aphasics, by use of "Psycholinguistic Assessment of Language Processing in Aphasia"(PALPA, Kay, Lesser & Coltheart, 1992), in fact, according to the two tasks, which included auditory and written synonym judgments. Both task included concrete or high imageability synonym and abstract or low image ability synonyms and their control pairs. All tasks were translated from English into Croatian language and also adjusted to Croatian language. Eleven aphasics were examined 8 of them with Broca's aphasia and 3 of them with Wernicke's aphasia. Therefore, the goal was to establish the differences according to the type of aphasia. Differences in recognition of concrete and apstract synonyms were confirmed for the most variables. The type of aphasia, auditory and written synonym judgments, and also concrete and abstract synonym judgments statistically confirmed expected differences in final results. Although the impact of concreteness/presentation for synonym' recognition in aphasic patients has been shown as significant in this research, further and more extensively research are needed. Creation of appropriate therapy should be the final goal of such diagnostic process.
