Endemic goitre, migration and nutrition of the dogon population

Within the multidisciplinary anthropological study of the Dogon population living in the Sanga region, Republic of Mali, the attempt was made to estimate the prevalence of endemic goitre as well as its relationship to inter-village migration and nutritional factors. The sample analysed consisted of 613 males and 488 females from seven villages. The results obtained show that the prevalence of endemic goitre in the Dogon population reaches 52.6%. The existence of differences in the prevalence of this disease at the subpopulation (village) level indicates the influence of some other causative factors, genetic and/or environmental, in addition to iodine deficiency. The results are discussed in the light of possible genetic predisposition to the disease assessed by the inter-village migration analysis as well as of the impact of nutritional factors.
