Anthropological and psychodynamic characteristics of family life of displaced persons and refugees - an example from the island of Hvar (Croatia) - problems and perspectives

Within the UNESCO participant project "The study and care of refugee families - a pilot study of anthropological and psychodynamic aspects" a three year long multidisciplinary study, including the field research from 1992-1995, was carried out on the island of Hvar, Croatia. The causes and processes of working through the trauma on individual and family levels, the ways in which families cope with the new situation, health and mental health problems among the population of displaced persons from the Vukovar area and among the refugees from different parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, have been analysed. The resources of the island as well as the effects of applied programs for helping those populations have been studied. The benefit of this research lies in its contribution to better understanding of the variations of individual and family coping strategies with multiple stresses and specific problems of displaced/refugee families in view of their interactions with the host community. The multidisciplinary approach provided a determination of basic principles of a basis for a model of protecting forced migrant families with the purpose of making it available to policy planners, administrators, practitioners in the field and ultimately, refugee health and well-being.
