Traffic and Its Impact on Morphological and Functional Urban Development in Historical Context: A Case Study of Bjelovar, Sisak and Koprivnica
Traffic is one of the dominant factors which influence the location of emergence of towns, their spatial development (morphological structure) and functional structure (spatial order of functional zones and buildings with central functions). Namely, traffic has always had a large impact on the urban construction and spatial distribution of a town’ s activities, although the possibilities of human and goods mobility have changed through history. Normally, towns represent the traffic junction of a wide region. In order of a better understanding of spatial structure and development of a town, here will be taken into consideration traffic in a town as well as towards a town - the region. In this paper the mutual dependence of traffic and development of the towns of Bjelovar, Sisak and Koprivnica will be analysed. These are three towns characterised by significantly different historically-geographical conditions of development. Traffic had one of the crucial roles in their development but with significantly different results.
