The relationship between migration, genetic and sociocultural variables: A log-linear approach

The log-linear analysis is a basic and straightforward method for analysing data by crosstabulation. The analysis is based on the estimation of discrepancies between the tables of fitted models (expected frequencies) and observed contingency tables. The aim of the present paper is to clarify methodological aspects of applying log-linear analysis to migration, and related processes. With this purpose the previously published migration data on the island of Hvar are elaborated. The results show that migration mobility depends on: a) geographic position of the villages on the island, b) size of the villages and c) closeness of the villages to the sea towns (the migration mobility factor). The interaction between migration, size of villages and gene frequencies was also formed separately from the migration mobility factor. The data obtained call for a more specific consideration of the role of village size, probably related to the socioeconomic standard of the inhabitants. The results show that the log-linear method can be used as supplementary to the existing procedures aimed at the estimation of changes in isolated genetic population s structure, as it points to significance of other effects in addition to known migration modifying factors (distances between settlements).
