Sediment meiofauna and nematode fauna from the Borovik reservoir (Croatia)
Freshwater sediment meio- and nematofauna were surveyed from May to October in 1996 at three stations in the Borovik Reservoir (Croatia). The purpose of the investigation was to assess differences in meio- and nematofauna among investigated sites according to sediment type, depth and influence of aquatic macrovegetation. Samples of sediment were collected by Eckman grab hauls proceeds in the laboratory by elutration method. Animals were counting and classified to the main meiofaunal taxa under dissection microscope. Nematode specimens were picked out and permanent slides were done. Speciments were determined to species or genera level. Ten major groups (Nematoda, Copepoda, Rotatoria, Cladocera, Ostracoda, Tardigrada, Oligochaeta, Turbellaria, Acari and Chironomidae) and 14 aquatic freeliving nematode species were recorded during the investigation period. Species Tobrilus gracilis dominated in the sediment of sites II and III, but was not recorded at site I. That species indicate the highly reduced sediment connected with water depth and high amount of organic detritus with high bacterial activity.
