Relationship of periapical status of endodontically treated teeth and type of postendodontic restoration
This study has evaluated relationship of the radiographic periapical status of endodontically treated teeth and the type of the postendodontic restoration. Panoramic radiographs of randomly selected patients from Department of Endodontology and Restorative Dentistry and Department of Periodontology, Dental School of Medicine in Zagreb, were examined. Six hundred and ninetysix endodontically treated teeth out of 265 panoramic radiographs have been evaluated independently by two examiners. The apical one- third of the root and surrounding structures were evaluated radiographically and the periapical status categorized as absence (API) or presence (PPI) of periradicular inflammation. Examined endodontically teeth were devided in nine groups regarding the type of postendodontic restauration. Restaurations were selected as: amalgam filling, composite filling, amalgam filling supported by intracanal metal confection post, composite filling supported by intracanal metal confection post, prosthetic crown, prosthetic crown supported by intracanal metal confection post, prosthetic crown supported by intracanal metal cast post, intracanal metal cast post only, unrestored tooth. Results were statistically analised by χ 2 test. The rate of API for all endodontically treated teeth was 45%. The teeth with amalgam fiilings in combination with intraradicular posts showed the highest API (71%), followed by prosthetic crown supported by intracanal metal cast post (55%), composite filling (51%), prosthetic crown (49%), composite filling supported by intracanal metal confection post (47%), intracanal metal cast post only (40%), prosthetic crown supported by intracanal metal confection post (39%), amalgam filling (35%), unrestored tooth (14%).
