Er:YAG and Nd:YAG laser in restorative dentistry and endodontics
In 1964, when lasers were first considered for dental use, researchers have investigated various applications of laser in dentistry. Different studies have evaluated the ruby, CO2, Nd:YAG, Erbium (Er):YAG, excimer, and argon lasers for their effects on hard and soft tissues as well as dental materials. Er:YAG laser has a cutting mechanism in a way that water molecules in microscopic area on an irradiated surface absorb electromagnetic energy. The pressure produced, causes microexplosions and vaporization of the target materials. The potential of the Er:YAG laser to cut hard dental tissues such as enamel, cementum and bone, without significant thermal or structural damage has attracted attention. Er:YAG laser with a wavelength of 2.94 µ ; ; m is used for tooth cavity preparations, as well as removing restorative materials, or endodontic surgery. A bloodless field is easier to achieve due to the ability of the laser to coagulate and seal small blood vessels. In contrast to this, low-power Nd:YAG laser was reported to have a significant reduction in permeability in resected roots. Development of the fibreoptic system of Nd:YAG laser, which enables the delivery of the light in a narrow, curved root canal, made this laser the most effective to sterilize exposed pulp tissues, or root canal walls after endodontic treatment. The Nd:YAG laser can be also used in treatment of oral soft tissue disease due to vaporization, coagulation or tissue ablation ability.
