NK cell activity is depressed in patients with anorexia nervosa

Our previous results showed that the number and proportion of T and B lymphocytes as well as their reactivity to mitogens were preserved in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). The aim of this study was to evaluate function of natural killer cells (NK) in the same group of patients. The proportion and number of CD 56+ cells and activity of NK cells were examined in 36 female patients (ranging from 12 to 20 years). All satisfied DSM-IV criteria of APA. The standard nutritional assessment included weight, height and body mass index (BMI). Obtained data, expressed as Z-score, were compared to the age related population references. The number of NK cells was determined by indirect immunofluorescence using monoclonal antibodies. NK activity was measured by an in vitro 51Cr release assay with K-562 cells as targets. Patients were divided in two groups according to BMI (kg/m2): BMI < 15 and BMI > 15. Control group consisted of 15 healthy female mached by age. Mean height z-score was close to normal (0, 45 ą 0, 83), whereas mean weight and BMI z-score were depressed (-1, 43 ą 0, 5 and -1, 71 ą 0, 46 respectively). Our results show normal proportion and number of NK cells in both groups of AN patients. At the same time activity of NK cells was significantly depressed compared to the control. There was no difference in NK activity between two patient groups. Thus, undernutrition in AN patients is accompanied by defective NK cell activity.
