Recycling of Varnished Offset Printed Packaging Prints
In this study, the full colour (CMYK) offset printed cardboard finished with the layer of varnish was used for the production of recovered handsheets. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficiency of conventional chemical two-stage deinking flotation of non-contact food packaging prints. The recycling was performed by chemical deinking with double stage flotation with the usage of sodium laurylethersulphate as a surfactant. After the first flotation stage the repeated flotation was done and the handsheets were produced before and after each flotation. The flotation froth was collected during both flotation stages in order to be flotated itself. The flotation efficacy was evaluated by measuring optical properties and by particle size distribution performed by image analysis. Additionally, mechanical properties of the handsheets were measured and compared with determined ash content. Even though the cardboard paper grades contain large amount of recycled fibers which would rarely be considered as an input material for deinking flotation process, results of the study prove that particular improvements in brightness, ash content and mechanical properties of recycled papers do occur.
