Influence of Spatial Dispersion on Properties of Waveguide filled with Wire Media – an Experimental Investigation
This paper reports preliminary experimental investigation of spatial dispersion of the wire media in waveguide environment. Several configurations were studied experimentally in 10 GHz band: the rectangular waveguide filled with 2D array of thin wires excited in TE10 mode and rectangular waveguide filled with 2D array of crossed non-connected wires excited in TE11 or TM11 mode. Experimental results revealed existence of spatial dispersion in the cases of modes whose wave vectors have non-zero components parallel to the wires (TE11 and TM11 modes). However, in the case of the waveguide with crossed not-connected wires excited in TM11 mode, it was also found that qualitative behavior of transmission coefficient is similar to that predicted by simple Drude model (the existence of both the forward-wave propagation and the backward-wave propagation), with apparently shifted plasma frequency. Thus, it seems that apparent shift of plasma frequency, which was in previous experimental studies attributed to the manufacturing errors, is actually caused by spatial dispersion.
