Subwavelength Guiding of Electromagnetic Energy in Structures based on Anisotropic SNG metamaterials
Recently observed counter-intuitive phenomenon of backward-wave propagation below the cut-off of the waveguide filled with anisotropic SNG metamaterial is analyzed analytically, numerically and experimentally. It is shown that the waveguide mode is made up of two inhomogeneous plane waves. These plane waves may have arbitrarily short wavelengths and this fact is responsible for the propagation below a cut-off. The full-wave simulation of realistic SRR-filled waveguide showed the backward-wave propagation band located below the cut-off as it was predicted by simple homogenized model. It was also found that the microscopic (in-cell) field distribution may significantly differ from the distribution in the homogenized waveguide. Additionally, it was shown that the propagation on the in-cell level is in the form of surface backward waves in the close vicinity of the inclusions. Two waveguides filled with double-ring resonators were prototyped and tested in 450 MHz and 8 GHz bands. The measurement results were found to be in good agreement with theoretical predictions.
