Numerical and Experimental Investigation of Inductively Loaded Thin-wire-based Metamaterial
Recently, it has been shown both theoretically and experimentally that loading of a thin-wire-based epsilon-negative (ENG) metamaterial with distributed inductances lowers the plasma frequency, which in turn squeezes electrical dimensions of the unit cell. In this paper, the basic properties of volumetric ENG metamaterials loaded with coil-like structures are investigated in the waveguide environment numerically and experimentally. As in the previous studies, it was found possible to manufacture an ENG material, unit cell of which spans less than /30. Additionally, it was found that previously noted unexpected resonant behavior of inductively loaded double-wire ENG metamaterial in the waveguide environment actually occurs due to spatial dispersion.
