MODIFICATION OF NATURAL ZEOLITE FOR WASTEWATER TREATMEN PROCESS
Natural zeolites are widely used at the second stage of the overall wastewater. Water treatment conditions influence ion exchange and adsorption process indicating the determination of optimal conditions as one of the tasks of this investigation. Thermal treatment of natural zeolite affects its structure and properties. Water molecules in zeolites can pass through the following phases: partial dehydratation, separation of remaining water molecules by cation hydrolysis, bounding of hydrogen ion with alumoslilica lattice structure, dehydroxilation and water molecule reforming. At the temperatures between 900oC and 1000oC, steam is trapped inside the microspores. At the 1200oC the melting process occurs, steam pressure increases the pore size and the process of so called zeolite boiling begins. Interpretation of transformation processes that occurs during the thermal treatment of natural zeolite is of primary importance for removal efficiency improvement related to metal ions pollutants in waste water. The hydrolysis of zeolite is conducted after the thermal treatment process. For this purpose two different solutions were used: redistilled water and synthetic solution of zinc ions.
