Sustainability and limit states of existing bridges in Croatia
Croatian bridges built after the World War II have been designed according to two essentially different norms, first the so called PTP-5 scheme and after 1973 the DIN 1072 scheme. New Croatian standards have implemented European pre-standards with national specifications incorporated through specific climate, environment and traffic circumstances in National Application Documents. This results in different reliability levels of older, of more recently constructed and of new bridges. In order to enable sustainable development of the whole Road Network it is necessary to reach the same reliability level of bridges on all traffic corridors. Therefore, in this paper, the reliability of existing bridges is estimated. Standardised load models are compared one to another but also with the actual service conditions to check whether the strict requirements of new European standards are justifiable and whether expensive strengthening works are immediately necessary.
