Country Report: Public Opinion Surveys in Croatia

This presentation provides an overview of the state of public opinion research in Croatia from 2000 to the present day. The issues addressed relate to the questions: who is financing and conducting research, which topics are surveyed, and what kind of methodology is used? In order to answer these questions, a content analysis of publicly available data has been carried out. Journals, research project data bases as well as web pages of public opinion research agencies and NGO’ s have been analyzed. The results show that the surveys are mostly not representative and research results are published with insufficient methodological explanation. In data processing, descriptive statistics predominates. The analysis further showed that only recently a synergy of various funding sources, necessary to carry out large scale surveys, has been developing. Private public opinion research agencies, civil sector and state institutes, as well as individual researcherst have begun to collaborate in the attempts to secure funding, but also to research hitherto neglected topics (such as attitudes towards the 1990s wars in the area, values, public opinion on NGO activities). This synergy that is developing is see as potentially beneficial for the improvement of research methods and sociological research of Croatian society in general.
