Eocene carbonate sediments and sea-level changes on the NE part of Adriatic Carbonate Platform (Island of Hvar and Pelješac peninsula, Croatia)

After the emersion of the Adriatic Platform thet lasted since the end of the Senonian and after the local accumulation of bauxite, the sedimentation was reestablished in the Early Eocene. This occurred in more-or-less brackish, protected lagoons and bays, where Kozina-type Limestones have been deposited. These are overlain by the Foraminiferal Limestones of an open marine shelf which has been deposited above a ravinement surface. Deposition of the Eocene carbonates (Kozina-type Limestnes in particular) is characterized by numerous breaks of sedimentation (hiati), some of which have lasted for ca. 2-2.5 Ma. These were caused by emersions in response to relative sea-level falls, and are documented by leached bedding planes, karstification and occurrences of bauxite. Progressive deepening of the depositional environment is responsible for formation of the so-called Transitional Beds, again aborted by a sea-level fall which caused emersion and created a hiatus. Finally, a thick Flysch Formation was deposited in a deeper-marine basin which was created by tectonical disintegration of the Adriatic carbonate platform accompanied by a sea-level rise. The oldest part of the so-called Flysch Formation (predominantly marls) was deposited during a highstand, whereas the youngest part characterized by turbidites was deposited durign the sea-level lowstand. The reduced thickness of the sediments in the Hvar section is caused by comparatively slow subsidence, whereas thicker sediments in the Orebić section indicate higher subsidence of a more labile structural block.
