Nuclear Energy and Nuclear Proliferation
The main concern of world politics, with very good reason is a nuclear disarmament. The optimism of late 80-ties and early nineties has proved to be unjustified. "New World order" has not been created. The threat of nuclear war is still here, and the present moment is a critical one; will humanity indeed remove the danger through the process in which START 1 and START 2 are only the first steps, or will it, after missed opportunities, disappointment and loss of hope return to confrontation again. In relation to these crucial issues of today it may seem that the question of peaceful use of nuclear energy is of minor importance. Sometimes it is even recognized as a nuisance, an unhelpful source of proliferation complicates. It cannot be wished away, it should not be encouraged, thus an issue best left alone. It is a somewhat strange attitude, in view of the fact that nuclear energy is one of the greatest discoveries of mankind, energy source for thousand of years, developed just in time to replace dwindling and climate affecting fossil resources. As mankind cannot survive without energy it is difficult to image that a source of such potential would not be used. The ecological arguments are strengthening for use of nuclear energy on a large scale even before fossil fuels are exhausted in order to reduce CO2 emission.
