A View through a Key-hole
Looking at a conventional map can be compared to peering into a room through an open door. The frame of the door determines the size of the part of the room we can see in the same way as the scale and the format of a map determine the amount of details depicted. Looking through the key-hole into a room we detect the details depending on the size of the key-hole. Sounds and smells diffusing through the keyhole are added to the image. We might associate the screen with the keyhole we peer through into the cartographic room. The cartographic room is created behind the screen – here the keyhole – and further information are provided via a database in the form of texts, video clips or sounds. The size of our screen in the shape of a keyhole determines the method and the character of the map design.
