Comparison of rigid-plastic finite element methods for bulk metal forming processes
In this paper, four rigid-plastic finite element methods (RPFEM) are compared: (i) conventional penalty RPFEM, (ii) mixed 3-field RPFEM, (iii) slightly compressible RPFEM and (iv) volumetrically elastic & deviatorically RPFEM. The comparison is performed considering the cylinder upsetting problem with respect to the efficiency of numerical procedure and solution accuracy. The upsetting problem is simulated using a self-made finite element code written in MATLAB. The volume loss, as an undesired consequence of the geometry updating procedure, is used as an accuracy criterion for the frictional analysis. Results of simulations show that volumetrically elastic & deviatorically rigid-plastic finite element method represents the most appropriate choice for the analysis of bulk metal forming processes regarding the efficiency and accuracy of the solution.
