The role of IT in designing business organizations

By this paper the authors wish to compare the factual history of IT in Croatian and Western companies. On the basis of empirical research that was carried out during 1995 and 1996 on the sample of 120 computer professionals employed in 10 companies in Zagreb, the authors arrive at the conclusion that every organization should be analyzed in its unique It path. Company structure has been more the product of managerial choice than of implementation of It. However, after IT has been implemented, it may have an influence in itself that enables or prevents certain choices.
