SULPHUR CONTENT REDUCTION IN FCC GASOLINE WITH LIQUID EXTRACTION

Hydrodesulphurization (HDS) is a process usually applied for sulphur content reduction in gasoline obtained by fluid catalytic cracking process (FCC). FCC gasoline is the biggest contributor to a sulphur contamination in motor gasoline. HDS process is very effective for aliphatic sulphur content reduction, but less effective for components like: thiophenes, benzothiophenes and its derivates, specially 4, 6 – alkyl DBT that has unfavorable steric configuration in reaction with catalyst. Nowadays, liquid extraction is applied as a very efficient method for aromatics (benzene, toluene, xylene) removal from hydrocarbon mixtures. It proved that commercial extractants which are used in aromatics removal processes, also have affinity toward sulphur components. The idea was to use commercial extractant for extractive sulphur removal from light gasoline produced by catalytic cracking process. Extractant used in investigated liquid – liquid extraction system was sulfolane (C4H8O2S). The effect of various parameters such as temperature, solvent ratio, time and mixing rate on sulphur removal efficiency in batch reactor, was examined. Also, experiments were conducted according to the two level factorial statistical method. With the optimization method quantity impact of singular input effects and their interactions on the main output effect (sulphur concentration in raffinate) were obtained and presented with mathematical correlations. Total sulfur content was measured with wave dispersive x-ray fluorescent spectrometer. Organic sulfur compounds were determined using gas chromatograph with PFPD detector.
