Testing of corrosion resistant steel reinforcement
Inspections of reinforced concrete structures have shown that due to aggressive environments almost all of them suffer from decrease of functionality during service life, especially due to carbonation and chloride induced corrosion. The requirements of 100-year design life for major bridge structures and enormous rehabilitation and repair costs associated with inability to satisfy these requirements have resulted in the development of a wide range of new technologies and materials to increase the durability of reinforced concrete structures. The aim of the present research is to evaluate the utilization of corrosion resistant steel as reinforcement in concrete when the structure is exposed to aggressive environment such as chloride contamination and carbonation. In this paper, the results of accelerated corrosion testing performed on four different types of steel (stainless steel grade 304 and 304L, corrosion resistant steel with low nickel content and black steel) in chloride contaminated and carbonated pore solution are presented.
