STRENGTHENING OF MASONRY WALLS WITH GLASS FIBER STRAPS

This paper describes results of testing masonry wall specimens. Two series of masonry wall specimens were tested. Each series consisted of unstrengthened and strengthened masonry. Wall specimens were strengthened with diagonal or with horizontal glass fiber straps. All masonry wall specimens were constructed of old solid masonry units, bricks of size 25/12/6.5 cm. The cement-lime mortar of low strength was used in order to represent walls of an old existing building. The masonry wall specimens of the first series, dimensions of l/t/h=51/12/55 cm, were subjected to monotonically increasing vertical compression load. Walls were strengthened with horizontal and with diagonal glass fiber straps. Horizontal straps were placed on three levels of specimen’ s height. At each level the glass fiber strap wrapped the wall in one layer. Considering stresses at failure, glass fiber straps have increased carrying capacity of walls by 55 to 65%, comparing with unstrengthened walls. The second series of walls, dimensions of l/t/h=103/12/106 cm, were subjected to constant vertical compression load and monotonically increasing in-plane horizontal load. Walls were strengthened with horizontal and with diagonal glass fiber straps. Horizontal straps were placed at five levels of specimen’ s height. At each level the glass fiber strap wrapped the wall in one layer. These types of strengthening of masonry walls increase the masonry horizontal force carrying capacities by 86 %, while the increase of equivalent tensile strength was 116 %. The test results have shown that carrying capacity and ductility of strengthened masonry walls were increased, both, for first and second series of specimens, when compared to carrying capacity of unstrengthened walls.
