First description of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) in wild boar (Sus scrofa) in Croatia and phylogenetic analysis of partial PCV2 sequences

The report describes PMWS in wild boars in Croatia. During the winter season of 2004 8 piglets /2-5 months of age) were found dead in a fenced hunting area. PCV2 specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR)carried out on the mesenteric lymph nodes proved to be positive. PMWS was confirmed on the basis of three key diagnostic criteria: clinical signs, moderate lymphoid lesions consisting of lymphocyte depletion and granulomaous immflamation and the detection of PCV2 by in situ hybridization. Isolates were sequenced and proved to be genetically identical among each other, and similar to Hungarian isolates.
