Krilni indeks pčela na području Republike Hrvatske
The Carniolan honeybee (Apis mellifera carnica) is an autochthonous species of bees in Croatia. Different climatic areas, plant cover and relief have influenced the development of three basic ecotypes of honeybees, which, however, are selectively insufficiently differentiated. These include the mountain ecotype in Lika and Gorski Kotar, Pannonian ecotype in the continental part of the country and Mediterranean ecotype in the coastal region and islands of Croatia. Hybridisation of these ecotypes might result in the so-called heterosis effect (improvement of characteristics in the first generation), without mixing of subspecies (Dreher, 1976). Carniolan honeybee bee is one of the most valuable subspecies of Western European bee (Sulimanović et al., 1993). Due to its good characteristics it presents the basis of investigation of selection programs in the majority of apiary institutes in the world. Its characteristics are vitality, ability to quickly adapt to changes in environment, gentle in its behaviour towards honeycomb, activity, successful over-wintering in small populations and high fertility rate of queen-bees. Carniolan honeybee has a long proboscis, dark colour of the body and belongs to bee races with a large cubital index. Owing to its outstanding characteristics, the Carniolan honeybee is excellent for beekeeping in our country. The aim of rearing and selection of queens is to secure the production of young, highly productive queens with improved hereditary properties (Dominiković et al., 1997). Other subspecies of Western European bee are present in the neighbouring countries, so that crossbreeding between several different races is likely to occur in border-lands. This could have a negative effect because of the possibility of alteration and reduction of the outstanding characteristics of Carniolan honeybee. The aim of the rearing program is to preserve the autochthony of carnica bee and its three ecotypes.
