Seismites of Krško Basin
Seismogenic sediment deformation structures, namely seismites have been recognized in 3 intervals of Raka sand deposits and Globoko sand interval of the Pontian age. There were 8 types of small-scale seismogenic deformations distinguished in the Raka and Globoko Pontian deposits, and one larger-scale collapse structure. There were no seismites recognized in Pho-Quatemary and Quaternary sand and gravel deposits at the same sites. This fact can lead to various conclusions: 1) there was no seismic activity at that time, what is not likely, 2) there are no favourable types of sediments where seismites can occur (sand, silt or clay beds) within Quaternary depositional sequences, 3) we did not yet find them, the conclusion we believe is most likely. At this point of study there is still present a lack of detailed stratigraphical control. Although Pontian lasted for quite a long period of time we have recognized only 3 phases of paleoseismic activity, and we were unable to assign any age to these phases. The area of study will be expanded to the Croatian part of the Krsko basin. Preliminary reconnaissance revealed several new locations (open sand and clay pits) with seismites developed., which will be studied in near filture. Special effort will be taken to find exposed Quatemary deposits (floodplain/lake deposits) with favourable lithologies in order to find record of Quaternary seismic activity, which will help most in evaluation of seismic hazards for the Krsko Nuclear Power Plant.
