The Influence of the Number of Changing Features on the Capacity of Visual Working Memory

In the previous work on visual working memory it was not controlled how the number of changing features and the duration of initial display influence performance. We systematically explored how these two factors influence estimates of visual working memory capacity using change detection paradigm. In Experiment 1 we used displays with four lines in different colours, orientations and sizes. Feature change across successive displays might occur in one, two or three features of the same object. Also, we varied the duration of the initial display on three levels: 100, 150 or 200 ms. The results showed that the increase in the number of changing features increases the capacity of working memory. On the other hand, duration had no effect on capacity and there was no interaction between stimulus duration and the number of changing features. In Experiment 2 we checked whether it was necessary for multiple feature change to occur on the same object or they could occur on different objects. The results showed no difference in the performance between the change on the single object and the change on two objects. Implication of this result is that objects are not stored in the working memory as integrated items. Rather, objects are stored as a list of features.
