Metabolic syndrome in type 2 diabetic patients in Split, Croatia
Aim: To determine the frequency of metabolic syndrome (MS) in type 2 diabetics and to investigate the possible difference in its prevalence according to WHO and NCEP-ATP III criteria. Methods: In this retrospective study enrolled were all type 2 diabetics aged >18, enlisted in three computerized family physician's offices using a questionnaire created for this purpose. Results: According to WHO criteria 26/150 (17.3%) examinees had MS while according to NCEP-ATP III the share was much higher: 47/150 (31.3% ; p<0.001). No significant differences in MS frequency were observed in terms of age or gender, while it occured more often in heavy alcohol drinkers (p=0.003). Conclusion: Almost two times higher prevalence of MS was observed in our diabetic patients using the ATP III (taking into account waist circumference) than using the WHO criteria (taking BMI). Measuring the waist circumference in family practice could be easier and more sensitive method of MS detection than calculating BMI.
