Potential for development of organic agriculture in Sisak-Moslavina County

The potential for development of organic agriculture in Sisak-Moslavina County Kisić I., Bašić, F., Mesić M. Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zagreb, Zagreb, Croatia Key words: Sisak-Moslavina County, quality of soil, organic agriculture Introduction According to Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development official data about 40 economic subjects on 250 hectares, of which Moslavka D.D. takes 44 ha, from Sisak-Moslavina County are registered in Register of eco-producers. The scope is to point the measures which will enlarge ecoagriculture area. Material and Methods Sisak-Moslavina County was chosen for many reasons. Several of them are trends of land use in County during last 20 years, great unemployment and soil quality. Current pre war resource in Sisak-Moslavina County is 40%. Transitional period is essential for soil used for conventional agriculture and in this case that requirement was satisfied, because former 80.000 hectares used for agriculture before Croatian War of Independence were not used for the last 15 years. Results Soil quality studies made before and after Croatian War of Independence point to initial overload of the soil. Conclusion based on this argument is that ecoanimal husbandry could be developed in this area. More than 50% of Croatian chestnut forests are located in the County area, which is prerequisite for eco chestnut honey production. According to oral announcement given to the first named author of this paper, baby food factory in Glina annually needs approximately 350 tones of milk products ; 50 tones of biosugar, 100 tones of oatmeal, 30 tones of durum flour, 30 tones of bio barley flakes and cereals ; 40 tones of bio mashed apples. These products can be produced and processed in County area. Up to 30% of bio plums are produced in Europe. Sisak-Moslavina County area was well known for plum production. After finishing Zagreb-Sisak highway construction, Sisak-Moslavina County will become the suburb of Zagreb City. Surely, that million market is market for all ecoagriculture products and also pleasant space to spend a day or weekend in undisturbed County nature. Discussion and Conclusion Basic limit for development the organic agriculture in County area is large number of small producers and small husbandry production. The problem is also producer’ s low education and ignorance. Large number of war damages are the reason why only older population have returned to rural area while young population exists in big cities. A good option how to bring back young population to rural area, beside agrarian/hunting tourism, is also ecoagriculture as maintenance for development rural County area. Unfortunately this is a longlasting process with uncertain results.
