The role of the local government in strengthening rural tourism in Istria
Rural tourism is becoming popular in Croatia among both farmers and visitors. The concept of integrated rural tourism in the world combines the principles and practices of ecotourism but adds into the mix the life patterns of the rural community. Well-organized structures for administering rural tourism are needed. By co-ordinating tourist factors in tourist resorts, the local government can significantly contribute to the development of rural tourism in Istria and, at the same time, also local communities. Since Istria has a leading position in Croatian rural tourism, the authors of the paper research the role of the public sector in the development of rural tourism in the frame of a tourist destination. Research was conducted on one of the seven clusters, Central Istria, considering the concentration of subjects dealing with this aspect of selective tourism. The research results hope to contribute in improving the knowledge on the role of the local government in strengthening entrepreneurship and tourism on a local level. The contribution of the paper can be seen in stimulating integration between farmers, rural villages, agriculture and local communities.
