ROLE OF HIGHWAY CORRIDORS THROUGH CROATIA IN NATURE PRESERVATION
When considering traffic, Croatia's territory is somewhat unfavorably shaped, creating difficulties for its optimal connection in the traffic sense. Two main parts of the state territory, the Coastal and the Pannonian, are divided by a mountainous part. The spatial planning strategy of Croatia and the Transport development strategy of Croatia define the highway network of 1501 km in total. Highway construction has a very significant place in Croatia’ s economy (employment of local population, opening of undeveloped areas, rehabilitation of tourism...). The complex spatial-traffic situation, the relief, geological and hydro-geological characteristics influenced the choice of layout and vertical highway elements per each section. In order to connect different Croatian parts with a high quality highway, especially sensitive and environmentally valuable parts of Croatia had to be passed, thus the designs include strict environmental protection measures. The designers, through expertise and experience contributed to traffic connection and at the same time preservation of eight national parks, also connecting old towns dating from Antic Times or Middle Ages. A drive of approximately 2hours offers the traveler a continental, mountainous and Mediterranean climate.
