Contribution of the Renewable Energy Sources in the Azorean Energy Mix- Applying the H2RES Model to Terceira Island

Due to isolated situation of the great majority of the islands, the satisfaction of its energy necessities is extremely important in the economic and environmental point of view. So that the islands reach a sustainable development and security in the energy supplying, the use of endogenous resources is elementary. Many islands present potential to become self-sufficient through renewable energies that they have available. This will be the best reply for the problems such as the increase of energy consumption and fossil fuel scarcity, these problems still have bigger relevance in isolated systems as small islands. The reduction of the dependence on fossil fuels is essential for the small islands, therefore a high bet in the renewable energy sources is necessary so that, with the adequate technologies and the necessary potential, they can in such a way substitute fossil fuels in the production of electricity and in the transports. The Terceira island is currently dependent in 99% of fossil fuels for the electric production, this scene in nothing is compatible with the definition of sustainable development or with the goals of Kyoto Protocol, so it becomes urgent to find alternative and sustainable solutions to the current situation. The objective of this study is to calculate different scenes for the penetration of renewable energies in the energy system of the Terceira island, using the H2RES model
