Gonad characteristic of cultured and wild Mediterranean amberjack (Seriola dumerili, Risso 1810)
Gonad characteristics of wild and cultured Mediterranean amberjack were investigated during the first three years of the life cycle. In the first and second year we found no differences in the gonad development of males and females. In the third year, wild females shoved pronounced oocyte development at the prespawning size, when caught in coastal waters before migration to unknown offshore spawning grounds. The gonads of captive females during the same period did not develop significantly. Testis of both wild and captive males had cells in all stages of spermatogenesis, giving milt with mobile spermatozoa. But, captive males gave a lower milt quantity as compared to wild. We found no significant difference in the growth of wild and captive amberjack during this period. Temperature is a major factor, influencing the sexual maturation of Seriola dumerili in coastal rearing sites, in comparison to wild populations which spend most of their lifespan in the warmer offshore Mediterranean waters.
