Enabler for Location-Aware Services in IMS
The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is a key element in the UMTS architecture supporting ubiquitous access to multimedia and other novel services. In context of the converged network architecture, the provision and conveyance of geographical location information is still an open issue. The goal of this thesis was to investigate the IMS service architecture and propose a model for location provisioning in the IMS domain. As the central part of this architecture, a service enabler named Location Enabler (LE) was proposed. The purpose of the LE is to provide location information of users in wireline and wireless network, over a standardized Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) interface by integration with location service capabilities in particular access networks. As a proof-of-concept in enhancing IMS-based services, a prototype service, named Location aware Push-to-Talk (LaPoC) has been developed and demonstrated. This thesis also proposes improvements primarily related to reducing the necessary amount of signaling related to location conveyance with the specification of a new type of location filter. Measurements have been conducted in a laboratory environment in order to illustrate the proposed solution and verify the benefits compared to existing solutions in terms of reduced traffic load and session establishment time.
